G8 Readers:
building great readers through text and tech

I haven't blogged... yet.

PictureThis is actually a poster that hangs in my classroom to encourage students (and me) to embrace a growth mindset.
There are so many people that have come out of the pandemic with some new skill, like making sour dough bread or learning to crochet.  Co-workers would talk being proud of quitting coffee (I know, crazy, right?) or getting more sleep.  It wasn't long until I started to feel like that last kid being chosen in gym class. So, I decided with a triumphant self-declaration: I'm finally going to blog about my experiences in the classroom! Well... it hasn't happened.   ...yet.
I really want to create a space where I can share quick tech tips with colleagues and blog about my instructional practices, and share tips for parents and students.  But, it just didn't happen this school year.
I always tell students that excuses get in the way of achieving our goals... of finally getting to that "yet." So, I don't want to use this school year as an excuse  for not blogging. BUT, it was a difficult year-one that presented teachers, students, and parents alike with various challenges: learning new skills, routines, attention to mental health, striving in different ways to build relationships, and so much more. I'd like to say that I always had my blog in mind--I did--it was on nearly every day's "to do" list. It just never made the priority cut.  I think it's so important to share what we know, which is the purpose of my future blog, but it important to share what we know and ourselves with those that need it most. In short, my students and colleagues, and myself needed me more this school year than my digital audience.
So, why did I allude to growth mindset and the "power of yet?"  Well, as a teacher it is important to practice what I preach (teach), so I'm encouraging myself to adapt this mindset.  I have a goal -- this blog in its full capacity-- but I haven't done it... YET.  And that's okay. I'll get there. This (calendar) year isn't over yet.

Afterthought: I created some amazing lessons this year because of my focus, and I'm incredibly proud of my ability to connect with students and provide them with incredible (increased) choice in the independent reading program this year.
You can check out some of the book talks I gave this year below (linktree link).
